MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's soccer team gave up a rare early goal and never recovered in a 2-0 loss to UAB on Thursday evening at Bear Field.
UAB (2-0-0) started the game with a bang when a sharp through ball past the Mercer (0-1-1) defense forced junior Josh Shutter to commit a foul in the box. Blazers senior Babayele Sodade made the Bears pay for the mistake when he easily converted the penalty kick chance to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead.
Mercer's best scoring chance of the game came in the 75th minute, with UAB still clinging to a 1-0 advantage. Junior Sharpe Sablon received a ball on a counter attack and was running towards goal when he fired a low hard shot that trickled just wide of the net.
The Blazers put the game out of reach at the very end when senior Chris Williams corralled a rebound attempt in the 88th minute and slid in an easy shot to make the score 2-0.
Freshman Carl-Oscar Andersson paced the Orange and Black offensively with four shots, including one on goal.
UAB goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski made four saves to preserve the shutout win, while freshman Greg Ranjitsingh made two saves in a losing effort.
Mercer is back in action on September 4 when Appalachian State comes to town for a 1 p.m. kick-off at Bear Field.
