MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's soccer team used some incredible individual offensive efforts and suffocating team defending to come away with an impressive 2-0 win over in-state rival Georgia Southern on Sunday evening at Bear Field.
The win for Mercer (3-3-1) concluded a three-game homestand and improved its home record to 3-2 thus far in the 2011 campaign.
The first half of the contest was filled with back and forth action and scoring opportunities for both squads. The Bears, however, broke through first in the 41st minute, when redshirt junior Matt Brazer dug out a ball in the corner, beat two Georgia Southern defenders and ripped a shot low past goalkeeper Ryan Platt to give the home team a 1-0 lead. The goal for Brazer was the first of his three-year career with the Bears.
The Orange and Black received another stellar individual effort at the beginning of the second half to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Ehjayson Henry picked up a ball at midfield and started a solo counterattack, running at and dribbling through three Georgia Southern defenders before ripping a low shot past Platt to put Mercer ahead for good, 2-0.
Junior Will Betts assisted on both of the Bears goals on the evening, putting him in a tie with Henry for the most points in the squad with six apiece.
Freshman Greg Ranjitsingh finished with four saves on the evening to record his second shutout of the season. The clean sheet for Mercer was especially impressive considering Georgia Southern entered Sunday's game with the seventh ranked scoring offense in the country, averaging 2.83 goals per game.
Mercer is back on the field when it travels to Nebraska to take on the University of Nebraska-Omaha on September 23. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. central time at Werner Park.
