MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's soccer team made it four wins in a row after a 2-0 victory over North Florida in its Atlantic Sun Conference opener on Thursday evening at Bear Field in front of a season-high 602 fans.
The four-straight wins for Mercer (5-3-1, 1-0-0 A-Sun) is the longest winning streak by the squad since it went 5-0-1 over a six-match span from Sept. 5-Sept. 30, 2010.
Thursday night's victory for the Bears also moves their mark up to 4-0-0 in A-Sun Conference openers under fourth-year head coach Brad Ruzzo
After a sluggish first half, it would be the Bears offensive catalyst so far in 2011 that broke the scoreless game up. Junior Will Betts got on the back end of a long throw in the box and headed home his team-high fourth goal of the season to give the home team a 1-0 lead.
The Orange and Black doubled their advantage in the 80th minute when redshirt junior Matt Brazer fed sophomore Ryan King a perfect through ball that King touched past UNF goalkeeper Federico Bertele to make the score 2-0.
That would be all the scoring in the contest, as Mercer goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh made two saves to record his third-straight shutout.
UNF (1-8-0, 0-1-0 A-Sun) was paced offensively by sophomore Luis Daniel Camejo who had three shots in a losing effort.
Mercer returns to action on Sunday evening when it welcomes Jacksonville into town for the first time since the Dolphins came to Macon last November and knocked the Bears out of the 2010 A-Sun Championship with a 2-1 victory. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Bear Field.
