MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's tennis team captured its first Atlantic Sun Conference victory with a 5-2 win over Northern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
Mercer improves to 5-12 overall and 1-1 in A-Sun play with the win while Northern Kentucky drops to 4-5 overall and 0-2 in A-Sun play with the loss.
"The guys did a really great job of bouncing back and getting a solid win today," assistant coach Tim McLane said. "NKU is a good team so we loved the way our guys jumped on top of them from the beginning and the difference today was we were able to close out our singles matches."
Mercer once again started the match by capturing the doubles point, using wins at No. 2 doubles by sophomores Arsav and Arnav Mohanty and No. 3 doubles by sophomore Anderson Scarpa and Joao Pagan to take an early 1-0 lead in the match.
The Bears then moved into singles play and collected two more points thanks to a 6-1, 6-3 win by Scarpa at No. 2 singles and a 6-0, 6-3 win by Arsav Mohanty at No. 6 singles.
Sophomore Austin Emmet then secured the match clinching point for Mercer with a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles.
Mercer hits the road for its next match when it takes on in-state rival Georgia Southern on March 20.
