STATESBORO, Ga. – The Mercer men's soccer team outlasted Georgia Southern in double-overtime to head back to Macon with a 1-0 victory on Thursday night.
After three scoreless periods, the game looked as if it may end in a draw, before freshman Will Bagrou found the back of the net in the 109th minute. After a long throw from Chandler Klemm, Max Poore sent the ball on to Bagrou, who stuck it in the right corner of the net.
The game was fairly well-matched throughout regulation, with Mercer (2-1) recording nine shots and Georgia Southern (1-2) notching eight. The Bears cranked up the intensity in overtime, tallying nine shots in just 20 minutes of play.
In addition to Bagrou's goal, Ian Antley came close to scoring when he hit the crossbar on a free kick in the 98th minute.
Of the two other Division I programs in Georgia, Mercer has defeated both Georgia State and Georgia Southern this season.
Next up, Mercer will travel to Columbia, S.C., to face South Carolina on Sunday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
