
Softball Rolls in Opening Day of Fall Season

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer softball team kicked off its 2016 fall season with a bang on Saturday, Oct. 1, defeating Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and Anderson College 15-0 and 7-0, respectively, at Sikes Field.
Five Mercer pitchers tossed a combined 16 innings of scoreless softball over the two games, highlighted by starts from junior Jill McElderry and freshman Stella Preston. Against ABAC, McElderry tossed five innings of three-hit ball while striking out five. Preston pitched a one-hitter over four innings and struck out five against Anderson.
At the plate, numerous Bears had big days resulting in their 22 total runs scored. Freshman Abby Walsh (2-for-2, 2B, HBP, BB), junior Meghan Rud (2-for-4, two 2B), junior Emma Andrew (2-for-4, 2B, RBI) and junior Quirisa Mauga (1-for-2, HR, four RBI) led Mercer offensively against ABAC.
In the 7-0 victory over Anderson, 2016 Southern Conference batting champion Taylor Miller reached base in four of five at-bats while Andrew roped a solo home run.
UP NEXT
Mercer returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 2 against ABAC and Anderson once again. The Bears host Anderson at 11 a.m. before battling ABAC at 3:30 p.m. at Sikes Field.
