Seniors Lead The Way as Mercer Downs VMI, 3-1
10/14/2016 9:51:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MACON, Ga. – Fittingly, all three of Mercer's goals in the Senior Night win over VMI came from seniors as the women's soccer team rallied to a 3-1 victory on Friday night.
Â
Prior to the match, Mercer held a short ceremony honoring its nine seniors. In the second half, those same seniors showed the Bears the legacy they plan on leaving as three seniors notched three goals and an assist in the final 45 minutes of play.
Â
After a scoreless first half for the Bears, Maddie Clark, Haleigh Svede and Corinne Wooten all found the back of the net to give Mercer its third consecutive Southern Conference win.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Keydets came on strong to start the match, when Sierra Brewer scored in the 8th minute after gathering the ball while Mercer was trying to clear the box. VMI held on to its 1-0 advantage throughout the first half and used a 7-2 shots advantage to do so.
Â
Mercer came out with renewed energy in the second half and took control of the home field. Clark scored first for Mercer in the 53rd minute after breaking away from the crowd and sending the ball to the top left corner of the net. Clark's goal knotted the score, 1-1, and kept the Bears in the game.
Â
Svede stepped up next for Mercer when she powered the ball into the top right corner of the net from outside the box. The senior midfielder notched her first goal of the season and netted the game-winning goal in the 71st minute. Wooten added a goal for good measure in the 78th minute when she sent a header in goal off a corner kick from Svede.
Â
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Haleigh Svede scored the game winning goal and led Mercer with three points off her goal and assist.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer led VMI in shots, 12-11, including a 6-4 shots on goal ratio.
Â
NOTABLES
"What a great way to recognize our seniors tonight. We came out a little slow in the first half, and credit to VMI, they got on early goal. They had a game plan to be physical and knock us off our rhythm, and they did a good job in the first half. We regrouped at halftime, came out in the second half and really controlled possession and created shots, chances and corner kicks. It's always great when all three goals come from seniors on senior night. Overall, I'm extremely happy. We've won four in a row and three of those have been in conference play. We've got another huge game on Sunday; we know what's at stake, so we'll enjoy tonight and go back to work tomorrow for a tough game with UNCG." – Head Coach Tony Economopoulos.
Â
RECORDS UPDATE
Mercer will host UNCG in the Bears' final home match of the season on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Bear Field.
