Culver Nets Golden Goal To Push Bears Past Spartans
10/16/2016 4:53:00 PM | Women's Soccer
MACON, Ga. – Just two days after the Mercer senior class showed the strength that comes from veteran experience, freshman Logan Culver stepped up and demonstrated that rookies can contribute as well. Culver scored the golden goal on Sunday to give Mercer a 1-0 win over UNCG at Bear Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless 90 minutes sent the match to overtime, both teams continued to look for chances in front of the goal. In the 94th minute, Haley McDuffee drove the ball down the left side of the field and sent a short pass to Culver. Culver dribbled for just a few seconds before firing off a shot from outside the box. The freshman sent the ball sailing to the back right corner of the net, stopping the clock and ending the match with a Mercer win.
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Logan Culver scored the only goal of the match, notching her fourth score of the year and her first game-winning goal.
STAT OF THE GAME
The Mercer defense kept UNCG from placing a single shot on goal.
NOTABLES
"I'm really proud of our entire team's effort today. To come out of the weekend with two big victories this late in the conference season is a huge testament to how far they've come. We're on a bit of a streak now; we're happy and we hope that continues. Overall, I was proud of everyone's effort today. We really had a great game plan and the players executed it. I felt we created a lot of chances in front of goal and one finally went in for us. Credit to Logan Culver, a freshman, for stepping up in overtime and burying a great shot. It was an overall team effort today. We look forward to our final conference game at The Citadel and hopefully we can keep the streak going." – Head Coach Tony Economopoulos.
RECORDS UPDATE
Mercer will travel to Charleston, South Carolina, to face The Citadel in the final match of the regular season. The Bears and the Bulldogs are set to kick off at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23.
