MACON, Ga. – A day after opening its fall season with dominant victories over Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and Anderson College, much was the same for the Mercer softball team on Sunday, Oct. 2.
The Bears hosted Anderson and ABAC once again at Sikes Field, defeating them 2-0 and 12-0, respectively. Through four games this fall Mercer has outscored its two opponents 36-0 behind stout pitching and collectively hot bats at the plate.
Freshman Stella Preston picked up where she left off on Saturday, tossing three innings along with six strikeouts and one hit allowed against Anderson in game one. She was relieved by seniors Anna O'Neill (2 IP, 4 K, no hits) and Maxine Rodriguez (4 IP, 4 K, 2 hits), who slammed the door in Mercer's closest game of the weekend. The Bears' bats were led by junior Meghan Rud (2-for-4 with a 3B) and freshman Danielle Castleberry (2-for-2 with a 3B).
Mercer's 12-0 win over ABAC was highlighted by four home runs, including a pair from junior Quirisa Mauga. The third baseman tacked on six RBIs, four of which came on one swing with a grand slam. Senior Taylor Rodgers and redshirt junior Caroline Taylor joined Mauga in the long ball party as well while freshman Abby Walsh notched a 2-for-3 performance with a RBI.
Junior Megan Bilgri recorded five innings of four-hit ball with one strikeout while Ginny Hearn added two innings, totaling one strikeout.
