The senior midfielder recorded a game-winning goal and two assists last week
SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer midfielder Jordan Duru was named the Southern Conference men's soccer Player of the Week by the league offices Tuesday morning after adding another game-winning goal and a pair of assists to his senior season resume last week.
Duru scored his third goal of the season in the 62nd minute against Wofford on Oct. 18 to break a 1-1 tie. The goal would end up as the eventual game-winner, propelling Mercer to a 3-1 victory over the Terriers in Spartanburg.
Later in the week, Duru played the role of setup man as he assisted on two of Mercer's five goals in a 5-0 rout of VMI at Bear Field on Oct. 22. It was a fitting performance for the Mercer captain on Senior Day as he helped the Bears to a 2-0 record for the week and reached 12 career assists, ranking him second among active SoCon players in the category.
All three of the Duru's goals this season have been game-winners, putting him in a three-way tie for first place in the category among SoCon players. Additionally, Duru is third among all active conference players in career game-winners with seven.
This marks the second time the Powder Springs, Georgia native has been recognized as the league's player of the week; he first earned the honor on Sept. 8, 2015. Duru is the first Mercer played to claim the weekly award this season.
Duru and the SoCon-leading Bears (11-5-0, 6-2-0) are set to face Furman (6-6-3, 2-4-2) in a pivotal match tonight at 7 p.m. at Stone Soccer Stadium in Greenville, South Carolina. The match will be streamed live on the SoCon Digital Network.
