
Softball's Offensive Outburst Leads to Pair of Wins

MACON, Ga. – Mercer has shown great promise at the plate this fall and Saturday was no exception, as the Bears defeated South Georgia State College 15-0 and Georgia Highlands 16-0 at Sikes Field in the second weekend of the 2016 fall softball season.
The Bears hit five home runs over the two exhibition contests while the pitching staff extended their streak of shutouts to six straight games this fall. Dating back to last weekend's fall season opener, Mercer has outscored its opponents 67-0 through six games.
GAME 1: Mercer 15, SGSC 0
The Bears were led offensively by Taylor Miller (2-for-4, three SB, three runs scored), Quirisa Mauga (3-for-4, two 2B), Emma Andrew (3-for-4), Megan Lane (2-for-3) and Jaya Alaan (HR) in their noon game against SGSC.
Jill McElderry starred in the circle, striking out five batters over four innings while Maxine Rodriguez recorded one punch out and allowed only one hit.
GAME 2: Mercer 16, Georgia Highlands 0
Mercer added four of its five home runs in the second game of the day, including a monster performance by Quirisa Mauga. The junior third baseman went 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs, one of which was a grand slam. Through six games this fall, Mauga has launched five home runs. Abby Walsh and Megan Lane joined in with home runs of their own while Meghan Rud went 4-for-5 with four runs scored.
Pitching-wise, Megan Bilgri, Stella Preston and Anna O'Neill held down the fort. Bilgri struck out three batters over three innings; Preston recorded four strikeouts in four innings; and O'Neill added three strikeouts in two innings.
UP NEXT
Mercer concludes its fall season with a doubleheader against Georgia Military College on Sunday, Oct. 9 starting at noon. Both games will be held at Sikes Field.
