SINGAPORE – Former Mercer center Justin Howard (1999-2003) extended his professional career for a 14th season as he re-signed with the Singapore Slammers of the ASEAN League with a one-year deal.
The Orlando, Florida native will open the 2016-17 ASEAN season on Friday, Nov. 25 against the Malaysia Dragons.
Howard has made a career as globe-trotting professional basketball player as he has played professionally for 18 different teams in South America, Europe and Asia. He has previously played in Argentina, Bahrain (Al Hala), Chile, Finland (UU-Korihait), Germany (BG Karlsruhe), Indonesia (Satria Muda), Mexico (Marineros and Fuerza Guinda Nogales), Spain (Andorra and CB Guadalajara), Syria, Thailand (Thailand Slammers) and Vietnam (Saigon Heat).
During his four-year career at Mercer, Howard tallied 101 blocks, ranking fifth in school history, and averaged 0.9 blocks per game (ranking sixth). His 49 blocks in the 2001-02 season led the team while his career average of 1.7 rebounds per game ranks eighth in school history.
"Justin is an extremely big player," Singapore's management said of Howard. "Not only is he tall (209cm) But he also has a very wide and strong body. It is almost impossible to push him out of the paint once he establishes position. He is a hard worker who gets up and down the court well (when in condition) for a player his size. A true 5 man who has the potential.
Mercer fans will get a preview of the newest edition of the Bears Tuesday evening at the annual Tip Off Event at Hawkins Arena starting at 6:30 p.m. The season opens on Friday, Nov. 11 as the Bears host Brewton-Parker at Hawkins Arena in the second game of a doubleheader.
