Bagrou, Antley and Duru named to first, second and third teams, respectively
KANSAS CITY, Mo. – A program-record three Mercer players were named to the 2016 Men's All-South Region Teams, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) announced Tuesday afternoon.
Â
Junior forward Will Bagrou was a first team selection while senior co-captains Ian Antley and Jordan Duru were named to the second and third teams, respectively. The trio led the Bears to their first NCAA Tournament in 15 years and was instrumental in Mercer capturing its first Southern Conference Tournament title with a 13-7-1 record.
Â
It is the second NSCAA All-South Region nod for Bagrou, who was a second teamer as a freshman in 2014. A 2016 MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist and the SoCon Player of the Year, Bagrou had eight goals and four assists en route to a 20-point campaign this fall. The Dacula, Georgia, native is Mercer's first-ever NSCAA All-South Region First Team selection. He's the only SoCon player on the 11-man first team, joining nine players from the ACC and one from the Big South.
Â
Antley earned All-Region honors for the second consecutive season, improving upon his selection to the third team in 2015. The defender anchored a Mercer back line that led the conference and ranked 41st nationally in goals against average (0.93) and added eight shutouts. He added one goal and one assist on the season while earning All-SoCon First Team honors for the second straight year as well.
Â
Antley joined Bagrou and former Mercer goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh as the only players in program history to earn NSCAA All-Region honors twice in a career.
Â
Recognized by the NSCAA for the first time in his career, Duru was the glue for a stout Mercer midfield with 10 points (four goals, two assists) and tied for first among SoCon players with three game-winning goals. The two-year captain finished his career as a three-time All-SoCon First Team honoree.
Â
The NSCAA All-America teams will be announced Friday, Nov. 9. Bagrou could become Mercer's first All-America selection.
