THE BEARS IN THE TEAM STANDINGS
The Bears dominated the field on Saturday thanks to a 5-over 293, which topped the remaining 14 teams by nine strokes. Mercer's 13-stroke advantage over second-place Toledo puts the program in position for its first team title since October of 2013.
COACH DRINKARD'S TAKE
"I'm proud of how we played today as a team. Each player did a great job of cleaning up their course management from the first round and did a much better job of club selections. Tomorrow the wind will be blowing a little more than the first two days so going to be another opportunity to challenge our decision making and our toughness."
"Payton and Jaelyn again lead the team in scoring but in very different ways. Payton hits a long ball and lot of greens where as Jaelyn relies more on the strength of her short game. It is fun to watch both be successful. In addition Hannah Mae cleaned up her execution errors from the first round and posted a 74."
MERCER SPOTLIGHT
Schanen heads into the final day of action with a four-stroke advantage over the rest of the field, after firing a 1-under 71 on Saturday. The Alpharetta, Ga., native now has two-straight rounds below par for a two-day tally of 3-under 141.
HOLE OF THE DAY
Schanen had the Bears' Hole of the Day on the Par-4 No. 13 hole. After her drive found a sand divot and the approach shot bounced through the green and nearly out of play, she saved par with an impressive pitch shot and ensuing putt.
MERCER NOTABLES
- The Bears hold a four-shot advantage on Par-3 holes through the first two days, but most of their damage has been on Par-5 opportunities. Mercer tops the field by an impressive nine strokes in those scenarios, posting an average score of 4.88.
- Tindal continued her tear as well, as she remains on pace for her first career Top-5 finish. The sophomore fell one stroke shy of her career-best today with an even-par 72 for a 2-over total score of 146.
- Hanna, who is competing as an individual, gave Mercer three individuals inside the Top-10, once again shooting an even-par 36 on the back nine to card a 1-over 73 to head into Sunday in a tie for seventh with a two-round total of 4-over 148.
- Schanen leads all players on both Par-4 and Par-5 holes, posting totals of 2-under and 3-under in those scenarios.
- Janiga and Schanen led the team with four birdies on Saturday, while Deems, Hanna and Tindal each added two.
