THE BEARS IN THE TEAM STANDINGS
Mercer's opening round of 300 leaves the team just three strokes out of the Top-5 in the nation's largest collegiate golf tournament, which features 41 teams. Chattanooga led all teams with a 5-under 283, while College of Charleston (290) and Coastal Carolina (291) rounded out the top three.
MERCER SPOTLIGHT
Tindal led the Bears on Sunday, as she closed out the first day in a tie for 15th overall. The sophomore finished 1-under on her first nine, before closing the day with a 2-over 38 in her final nine holes to finish with a 1-over 73.
HOLE OF THE DAY
Deems had the team's top hole on the Par-5 18th hole. The sophomore hit a great wedge shot into tight back pin, but the firm green wouldn't hold it as it rolled down nearly into the hazard. However, Deems rebounded with a shot within a foot of the hole, which allowed her to tap it in to save par.
COACH DRINKARD'S TAKE
"It was a good start for the team. I thought we made progress handling the 11-15 mph winds, much better than we did in our first tournament. The greens are firm so when we got down wind they really had to strategize to figure out where they wanted their shot to land and release to the hole."
"I'm proud of Jaelyn, she has really been playing well and it's fun to see her get off to a great start this weekend in her home state. She is so upbeat and positive all the time which really passes down to all of our players."
MERCER NOTABLES
- The Bears had seven birdies on the opening day, as Hanna, Janiga and Tindal had two each to pace the team.
- Mercer has now had three straight rounds of 300 or better as a team.
- The Orange and Black tied for third in the tournament with scores of par on a total of 60 holes in the opening round, just two strokes behind leader Chattanooga.
- Deems leads the entire field, after carding a score of par on 15 of her 18 holes on Sunday. Tindal was close behind with 14 holes of par golf.
