Three Bears Card Sub-Par Rounds on Second Day of Golfweek Program Challenge
9/12/2016 5:55:00 PM | Men's Golf
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Mercer's men's golf team refused to let Mother Nature rain on their parade, or at least dampen their spirits. Despite a brief downpour, three Bears carded subpar rounds and Mercer remained in fifth place overall after a five-under-par second round at the Golfweek Program Challenge Monday at the True Blue Golf Club in Myrtle Beach.
The Bears had three different golfers – Jerry Ren (-4), Justin Connelly (-3) and Hayes Rule (-2) – card sub-par rounds Monday while three golfers – Ren, Rule and Stanton Schorr – enter the final round in the top 25 on the individual leaderboard. Ren had the hot hand of the day with two eagles and two birdies.

MERCER IN THE TEAM STANDINGS
The Bears enter the final round at 13-under-par, only six strokes behind the leader, Jacksonville (-19). James Madison follows at 18-under-par with Campbell at 17-under-par. The top four teams are separated by four strokes while the top five teams are separated by six strokes. Mercer has a five stroke lead over Gardner-Webb and Stetson, who are tied for sixth at 8-under-par.
COACH KAYDEN'S TAKE
"It was another pretty solid day for us as we shot five-under as a team. Jerry [Ren] and Justin [Connelly] led us today with rounds of 68 and 69, respectively, while Hayes Rule was solid with a 71 again. As a team we are only six back of the leader so we are still in contention to have a very good tournament and we still have a chance to move up with a good day on the final round."
"The guys are definitely building confidence and playing hard. The greens continue to be receptive but we had to fight through some rain today. It poured for about 15-20 minutes but our guys performed well despite that challenge thrown at them. We are looking forward to tomorrow's final round."
NEXT ROUND PAIRINGS
Mercer will tee off the third and final round starting at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday. The Bears will be paired with Gardner-Webb and Houston Baptist. Follow Live Scoring here.
