MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Talk about learning from his past. Mercer sophomore Stanton Schorr, after carding bogeys the last two days on the third hole at the True Blue Golf Club, fired a hole in one as part of a top 10 finish Tuesday at the Golfweek Program Challenge.
Schorr finished tied for 10th with teammate Jerry Ren at 6-under-par (66-75-69=210) for the three-round tournament (Ren carded 72-68-70). Meanwhile Hayes Rule's third-consecutive 1-under-par round placed him tied for 19th (-3, 213), three Bears in a top-20 finish on the individual leaderboard.
Overall Mercer finished fifth at 20-under-par (280-283-281=844), topping Jacksonville State and Stetson by five strokes. Jacksonville won the team title at 32-under-par while Mercer beat the lone other Southern Conference team, Western Carolina (+15, 879), by 35 strokes.

COACH KAYDEN'S TAKE
"The guys definitely made a run, which is a positive thing to see from a young team. We fought ourselves back into contention through 12 holes but just couldn't quite keep it together at the end. I am encouraged by our progress this week. Obviously our goal is to win when we get here but we had some encouraging things happen this week and a lot of positive from this week including three guys finishing in the top 20."
"We had a good team performance. It is something we can build on for this fall. These guys know they can do it once they get in this position again. It was exciting to see."
On Stanton Schorr's hole in one:
"Obviously that doesn't happen very often but I am very excited for him. It is pretty special to have a hole in one in a competition. He made it but then had to get refocused and back in the round quickly because the adrenaline is flowing but play continues."
NEXT EVENT
Mercer has a quick turnaround as the Bears will tee off at the EKU Intercollegiate on Friday, Sept. 16 in Richmond, Kentucky. Hosted by Eastern Kentucky, the EKU Intercollegiate is a three-day, three-round, 54-hole tournament.
