Bears Topple Terriers in SoCon Quarterfinals

MACON, Ga. – Mercer Men's Soccer advanced to the SoCon Tournament semifinals on Saturday evening, following a 2-1 victory over fifth-seeded Wofford at Bear Field.

STAT OF THE MATCH
Mercer collected 19 total shots for the match to outshoot the Terriers by 15. The Bears also held an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal.

MAN OF THE MATCH
Will Bagrou and Roberto Arteaga each earned Man of the Match honors following today's victory. The duo collected one goal apiece, while accounting for 11 of Mercer's 19 strikes.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears and Terriers were locked in a stalemate at the conclusion of the first half, despite Mercer outshooting its opponent, 8-1. Bagrou had an opportunity for a first-half goal, but his penalty kick was turned away by Matthew Reynolds.

Arteaga delivered the go-ahead goal in the 51st minute following a beautiful deliverance from Jake Mezei. The junior midfielder played the perfect ball into the box and Arteaga seized the opportunity with a header into the back of the net for his third goal of the season.

Bagrou continues to build on an already stellar career, netting his 12th goal of the season and 37th of his career in the 63rd minute. Bagrou was fed the ball at the top of the box, before putting a couple of defenders on skates with nifty footwork. Bagrou saw an open window, lacing the ball into the back left corner of the goal to double the Bears lead to 2-0.

The Terriers would not fold as Zach Aversano trimmed the Mercer lead in half in the 70th minute. Aversano's goal came off a rebound, placing the shot into the back right corner beyond the arms of Jeremy Booth.

Mercer held tough in the final 20 minutes, yielding just one shot to Wofford to cling to the 2-1 victory and etch its name in the SoCon Semifinals.
