Fourth-seeded Bears advance to SoCon Championship final for second straight season
GREENVILLE, S.C. – No. 4 Mercer advanced to its second straight Southern Conference Championship final after defeating top-seeded ETSU on penalty kicks (4-3) after 110 minutes of scoreless play Friday afternoon at Eugene Stone Stadium.
Â
Will Bagrou netted the match-clinching penalty kick for Mercer (7-8-5), which defeated the No. 1 Bucs (9-2-7) on penalty kicks for the second straight time in SoCon Championship play. The Bears bested ETSU on penalty kicks (4-1) in last year's conference tournament final to clinch a NCAA Tournament berth.
Â
Mercer will face the winner of No. 2 UNCG and No. 3 Furman in the SoCon Championship final at 1 p.m. Sunday in Greenville. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN3.
Â
Stat of the Match
Jeremy Booth is tough to beat in SoCon Championship play. The senior goalkeeper has only allowed one goal in 600 minutes of regulation/extra time over six SoCon Championship matches dating back to 2015.
Â
Man of the Match
Booth shined brightest during penalty kicks, coming up with two saves on ETSU's first and third shots of the period. He recorded three saves in regulation/extra time.
Â
How It Happened
Mercer held the advantage throughout the first 45 minutes of play, totaling seven shots by five players – including three by Jake Mezei – despite failing to find the back of the net before halftime. Trenton Whitely's free kick from 20 yards out proved to be Mercer's best attempt of the half, as it glanced off the left post. Defensively, Mercer limited the Bucs to two shots in the first half, neither of which required a save by Booth.
Â
The Bears opened the second half on the defensive as Booth notched one save in the final 45 minutes of regulation. With time disappearing and a scoreless tie still present, Kobe Perez drew a penalty in the box to create a penalty kick in the 87th minute. Whitely took the penalty kick, but it was saved by a diving Jonny Sutherland, ultimately sending the teams to extra time.
Â
Booth recorded two saves in the first of two overtime periods while Mercer could only muster one shot offensively over the 20 minutes of extra time. Perez, Mezei, Conner Antley and Bagrou all converted their penalty kick attempts while Booth came up with saves on ETSU's first and third attempts. Mercer's only miss was by Roberto Arteaga, who narrowly missed with a shot off the crossbar. Â
