Mercer Drops 10 Inning Heartbreaker
3/19/2017 6:16:00 PM | Softball
Â
The wild finish came in the 10th inning as Mercer (14-19) left the tying run on third base after Belmont (22-6) took a five-run lead in the top half of the inning. The Bears would score four runs in the bottom off the frame – two off a two-run home run by Megan Lane and another two courtesy a two-run double from Quirisa Mauga – but Mauga would be left at third as the game came to a close.
Â
Castleberry's three-run home run pulled Mercer into a tie with Belmont in the sixth. She would pull the same heroics in the eighth inning as she ripped a two-run triple to right field to tie the game but was called out on a play at the plate as she attempted to score. Each team would score one run in the ninth, sending the game into a wild 10th inning.
Â
Belmont's Jess Andre hit a grand slam in the top of the 10th – her second grand slam of the game – after the Bruins had driven in the international tiebreaker runner.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Give it up for the freshman. Danielle Castleberry, a freshman from Ellenwood, posted season bests in just about every category with three hits, two runs, five RBIs and was also hit by a pitch. Twice she kept Mercer alive in the game; first with a three-run home run in the sixth inning and then again with a two-run triple in the eighth.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
Mercer recorded an astounding nine extra-base hits in the game (three doubles, three triples and three home runs). That is more extra base hits the Bears registered Sunday than they have in their last 11 games.
