MACON, Ga. – The Bears grabbed their second Southern Conference win of the season and improved to 10-5 overall with a 5-2 victory over Samford on Wednesday. This marked Mercer's first win over Samford since 2003.

Mercer started strong, taking the doubles point with wins at flights one and three. Katia Stavroulaki moved quickly at flight one and won 6-1, 6-0 to put Mercer up 2-0.

Andrea Peteu also won 6-1, 6-0 to give the Bears a 3-0 advantage early in the match. Samford made it 3-1 after picking up a point from flight four, but Katie Sidor clinched the win for Mercer with her 6-2, 6-4 win at flight three. Sidor provided the winning point for the second straight match for Mercer.

Samford grabbed another point and Haley Powell wrapped up play with a 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 win at flight five to make the final score 5-2.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Katia Stavroulaki went 2-0 on the day as she and Grace Korta win the deciding doubles match and then Stavroulaki went on to win the first singles match to keep Mercer's momentum moving.

COACH HAYES' TAKE
"Really for the first time this season, the team came out aggressive in singles and played to win. Samford is a good team with a quality coach; they will beat people this year. We have a week to get healthy and get ready for UNCG."
