Bears Down Spartans, 5-2, For Fourth Straight Win

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Mercer improved to 11-5 on the year and 3-1 in Southern Conference play after a 5-2 win over UNCG on Thursday afternoon. The Bears have also won their last four matches, tying their longest win streak of the season.

UNCG took a 1-0 lead in the match after winning the doubles point with wins at flights two and three. Katia Stavroulaki knotted the score, 1-1, after a 7-5, 6-2 win at flight one to start singles play strong for the Bears.

Katie Sidor put Mercer up 2-1 with a 6-2, 6-4 win at flight three and Marie Mottet made it 3-1 after her 6-3, 6-4 victory at flight four. The Spartans picked up another point and cut Mercer's lead to 3-2 after a win at flight six.

Haley Powell clinched the match for the Bears with her 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 win at flight five and Grace Korta wrapped up play with a 6-7, 6-4, 1-0 win at flight two, moving the final score to 5-2.

PLAYER OF THE MATCH
Katia Stavroulaki once again went 2-0 as she and Grace Korta won their singles match and then Stavroulaki won the first singles match to get Mercer's momentum moving.

"The team did a really good job of rebounding after losing the doubles point. We need to play with that sense of urgency all the way, not just when our backs are against the wall."

Mercer is at ETSU on Saturday at 10:30 a.m. for the Bears' last road match of the SoCon slate.
