Mercer Falls in Close Contest in Series Opener at Samford

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mercer held a 3-2 lead entering the sixth inning but allowed single runs in back-to-back innings to drop a 4-3 decision at Samford in a Southern Conference series opener Saturday afternoon.

The Bears (20-27, 6-7 Southern) were led by Meghan Rud's 2-for-3 performance at the plate and two stolen bases but a hot-hitting Samford (20-28, 8-5) team would not be denied late in the game. With four walks and a hit by pitch Mercer received five free passes to the basepaths and had its chances, but stranded 11 runners in the game.

Stella Preston (5-7) was charged with the loss after allowing two runs on six hits. She did not issue a walk and struck out four.

Meghan Rud was 2-for-3 at the plate while drawing a walk. She added to her school-record stolen base tally as she was successful in both of her attempts.
