4/23/2017 5:25:00 PM | Softball
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Mercer hit back-to-back home runs in the second inning but it wasn't enough as Samford scored four runs over their final three offensive innings as the Bears dropped a 6-3 decision in the series finale at Samford Sunday afternoon.
Â
Taylor Rodgers smashed a two-run shot to left field and Caroline Taylor followed that up with a solo home run to left but Mercer (21-28, 7-8 Southern) would be unable to score any more runs in the game. Trailing 3-2, Samford (21-29, 9-6) would score two runs in the fourth and add a single run in both the fifth and sixth innings in the 6-3 decision.
Â
Stella Preston (5-8) was charged with the loss after allowing four runs on six hits while striking out four and not allowing a walk.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Caroline Taylor gets the nod with her 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Her run and RBI were both courtesy of the junior's home run in the second inning.
Â
STAT OF THE GAME
The middle of the lineup brought their bats Sunday as Mercer's 4-5-6-7 hitters accounted for five of Mercer's six hits.
