CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. – Danielle Castleberry was 2-for-3 and Emma Andrew crushed a two-run home run but Samford scored single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to eliminate Mercer, 4-3, in the Southern Conference Tournament semifinals.
Â
The Bears (26-31) held a 3-2 lead after Andrew's two-run blast in the third inning but the Bulldogs (25-35) manufactured a single run in back-to-back innings late in the game.
Â
Four Mercer pitchers combined for six strikeouts while only issuing one walk against arguably the best offense in the Southern Conference. Stella Preston (5-10) was charged with the loss.
Â
Mercer first held the lead in the second inning when Castleberry drove in Megan Lane on a double down the left field line. Samford responded in the second when Shelby Maze drove in two runs to take the lead.
Â
An RBI single by Abbie Miranda in the fifth would tie the game before Samford regained the lead for good in the sixth as Madison Couch hit an RBI single to center.
Â
Grey Adams (12-14) pitched a complete game for Samford, allowing three hits on three runs with three walks and three strikeouts.
Â
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Emma Andrew gets the nod for her clutch performance at the plate. While 1-for-3 in the game, Andrew stepped to the plate in the third inning with Mercer trailing by one and smashed a two-run home run over the left field fence.
