Bears slip in season opener at Georgia State
ATLANTA, Ga. – Mercer men's soccer team fell to Georgia State by the final score of 2-0 in the season opener at the GSU Soccer Complex. Hannes Burmeister buried both goals for the Panthers, lifting Georgia State to the season-opening victory.

Georgia State outshot Mercer by the final tally of 14-10, including 6-3 in shots on goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither team was able to draw first blood in the opening half, despite the Bears sending one shot on frame in the fourth minute of play. The two squads combined for eight shots in the opening half with just one on target.

The Panthers came out of the locker room firing the ball early on, peppering four shots in the opening 12 minutes of the second half. Jeremy Booth turned away an attempt from Rashid Alarape in the 57th minute following a spectacular kick save to keep the contest knotted at zero.

However, Burmeister connected on his first of two goals in the 59th minute as his shot found the back of the net for the 1-0 lead. The Panthers' leading scorer from 2016 added his second goal of the game in the 64th minute to double the Georgia State lead.

Yannic Horn turned away two shots in the final 17 minutes to preserve the clean sheet, including a diving save following a rifle of a shot by Jake Mezei.

Mercer had eight corner kicks in the contest, including five in the final 20 minutes but could not capitalize on the chances.
