Men’s Soccer Falls to Gamecocks on Late Overtime Goal

COLUMBIA, S.C. – Mercer men's soccer fell to South Carolina by the final score of 2-1 in overtime at Stone Stadium. The Gamecocks netted the golden goal with five ticks left on the clock in the first overtime period.

STAT OF THE MATCH
The Bears outshot the Gamecocks by the tally of 15-7, including 6-4 in shots on goal. Mercer also registered five corner kicks to just one for South Carolina.

MAN OF THE MATCH
Will Bagrou garnered the man of the match honors after capitalizing on his penalty kick attempt in the 65th minute. Bagrou notched the first goal for the Bears this season, his 26th career goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Neither team was able to crack the scoreboard in the opening half, despite Mercer outshooting the Gamecocks 5-2, including 2-0 in shots on goal. The Mercer defense proved troublesome for South Carolina, yielding no opportune moments for the host team in the first half.

Both teams continued the defensive battle midway through the second half. However, in the 64th minute, Mercer was awarded a penalty kick after a great run by Bagrou ended in a foul in the box. Bagrou stepped up and calmly netted the ball inside the left corner for the first Mercer goal of the season.

The Gamecocks evened the game at one apiece in the 75th minute as Benjamin Gilligan headed the ball in the net off a rebound, following the initial shot by Spencer Meschter.
