MACON, Ga. – Mercer Men's Soccer split a 1-1 decision with the Winthrop Eagles on Friday night at Bear Field. The Bears played in front of a boisterous home crowd in the squad's home opener, improving to 0-2-1 on the season.

STAT OF THE MATCH
The two squads combined for 45 shots on the game as Winthrop outshot Mercer, 23-22. The Eagles also held a 6-5 advantage in shots on goal.

MAN OF THE MATCH
Ramario Thompson secured the man of the match honors for the Bears, recording his first goal of the season. The transfer redshirt-junior played just 45 minutes but made his presence felt, registering one goal on two shots.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer struck first in the 29th minute of play to take the early 1-0 advantage. Jake Mezei set up the Mercer goal, sending a cross to the far right post. Thompson was there to clean up the ball as the 6' 4" defender rose above the Winthrop defense to head the ball into the near corner for the lead.

The Eagles outshot Mercer in the second half, 8-6, including netting the equalizer in the 83rd minute of play. Winthrop's goal was scored by Rasmus Arousell, sending a shot from 25 yards out into the far right corner of the net.

Neither team was able to come up with the game-winning goal, despite the Eagles outshooting the Bears 8-2 in the two overtime periods.
