Former Mercer student-athlete earns coaching spot under Brad Ruzzo
MACON, Ga. – Former Mercer men's soccer standout Ian Antley has been named the program's volunteer assistant coach, as announced by head coach Brad Ruzzo on Monday.
Â
Antley was instrumental to one of the most successful four-year periods in program history as he starred for the Bears from 2013-16, leading the team to 43 wins, one Southern Conference regular season title (2014), one SoCon Tournament title (2016) and the program's first trip to the NCAA Tournament (2016)Â in 15 years.
Â
"Ian has been an instrumental part of this program as a student-athlete and I am extremely happy that he will continue to be involved as an assistant coach while pursuing his master's degree at Mercer," Ruzzo said. "He had a great playing career and can use that experience to mentor our current group – I look forward to his development as a coach."
Â
Antley is the fourth addition to Ruzzo's staff, which already includes assistant coach Emmett Rutkowski and graduate assistant Marcus Aldaba.
Â
The defending SoCon champions are a little more than two weeks away from their season-opening match at Georgia State on Aug. 25 in Atlanta. The Bears will play a pair of exhibition matches at Belmont (Aug. 14) and against North Florida (Aug. 17) before the season officially starts. Mercer returns the bulk of last year's roster, including a six-man senior class that is anchored by 2016 MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist and All-American forward Will Bagrou.
