Mercer Falls Short to Marquette in Final Match of Road Swing

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Mercer women's soccer team lost a hard-fought 2-0 decision in the final match of the Marquette Invitational to the Golden Eagles Sunday night at Valley Fields.
STAT OF THE MATCH
Senior forward Valeria Bermeo led the team in shots with two on the night.
WOMAN OF THE MATCH
Freshman goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert came up with a collegiate-career high of 13 saves in goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bears came out gunning for a goal early in the match. Goalkeeper Jordyn Ebert was first tested in the 7th minute, coming up with a save for the Bears. Logan Culver had the first shot of the night for Mercer firing one wide in the 10th minute.
In the 22nd minute Jordyn Ebert produced her second save of the night to help keep the Bears knotted at 0-0. The Golden Eagles struck first minutes later, when Eli Beard scored, assisted by Kylie Sprecher in the 32nd minute.
Mercer attempted to respond with Ally Fordham and Sarah Adcock firing a pair of shots towards goal with Marquette blocking both. The Golden Eagles entered the locker room with a 1-0 lead.
Marquette continued to look to extend their lead out of the halftime break. In the 51st minute the Golden Eagles forced Mercer's Ebert to come up with back to back saves to keep the team in striking distance. Culver rocketed another shot towards goal moments later but was blocked by Marquette.
The Bears had their best chance of the night when Alina McCue drilled one off the crossbar, with Bermeo rebounding forcing Marquette to a save.
Marquette nearly stretched to a 2-0 lead when Darian Powell hit one off of the crossbar herself in the 81st minute. Moments later the Golden Eagles extended with Erin Johnston connecting from Darian Powell to double the Bears' deficit in the 83rd minute.
Mercer continued to press for a late goal but could not find the back of the net, dropping a 2-0 decision
