Explosive second half lifts Mercer to victory over Wofford
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Men's Soccer squad ran its win streak to five with a 5-2 triumph over the Wofford Terriers on Saturday night at Betts Stadium. The Bears used three unanswered goals in the second half to improve to 9-2-2 overall and 2-0-0 in Southern Conference play. The Terriers fall to 2-9-1, 1-2 in league play following the loss.
STAT OF THE MATCH
The Bears registered a season-high 14 shots on goal in tonight's match, tallying 27 shots overall. Mercer held the Terriers to just five on frame, yielding two goals in the victory.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Trevor Martineau picked up four points in the victory, collecting one goal and recording two assists. Martineau assisted on the first and last goal in the match, while picking up the match-winning goal in the 54th minute of play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Mercer picked up two quick goals in the first 14 minutes of the match. The Bears first goal came in the 10th minute of action as Jake Mezei found the back of the net for the second time this season, assisted by Martineau. Four minutes later, Roberto Arteaga capitalized on his third penalty kick of the season to stretch the Bears' lead to two.
The final 15 minutes of the opening half belonged to the Terriers, scoring two goals to tie the match at halftime. Ethan Willie and Kyle Nelson tallied the two strikes for Wofford to conclude the half.
Martineau connected on the game winner in the 54th minute, recording a goal on Mercer's first attempt in the second half. The freshman forward received the ball from Leo Toledo Jr. and Kobe Perez, elevating above the defenders for a hard-knocked header into the back of the net.
The Bears doubled their lead in the 62nd minute when Toledo Jr. picked up a misplayed ball from the Terriers defenders and rifled a shot on frame from 30 yards out. The strike took a hard bounce in front of the Wofford keeper, trickling through his hands and into the net for Toledo's fourth goal of the season.
The final goal of the match came in the very next minute when Jason Nduese-Udom scored his first collegiate goal. Udom's goal was assisted by Martineau and Mezei, delivering the ball into the box for Udom to clean up.
