Toledo scores two and Perez adds insurance for 3-1 victory
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Mercer Men's Soccer team picked up a quality three points on Tuesday night, defeating Belmont 3-1 in Nashville, Tenn. The Bears ran their winning streak to six, while notching their 10th win of the season, improving to 10-2-2 (3-0-0 SoCon). With the loss, the Bruins fall to 2-9-2 (0-2-1 SoCon).
STAT OF THE MATCH
Belmont had opportune chances on corner pieces, recording 10 corner kicks to just one from the Bears. The Bruins only scored on one corner kick, heading in a rebound that was initially saved by JR DeRose.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Leo Toledo Jr. proved to be a difference maker for the Bears tonight, scoring the equalizer and the game-winning goal in a span of three minutes. Toledo Jr. also drew the foul outside the box that set up the free-kick goal for Kobe Perez.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Belmont tallied the match's first goal in the 22nd minute of play off the corner kick. Liam O'Brien sent a header on frame that was turned away by DeRose. However, the ball bounced back to O'Brien where he recollected for another header into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Three minutes later, the Bears found the back of the net for the equalizer. The goal was set up by freshman standout Trevor Martineau, deking a defender to get the ball onto his right foot. Martineau then delivered a ball across the middle of the box for Toledo to finish, his fifth goal of the season.
Toledo found the back of the net again just three minutes after his equalizer. Once again, the goal was set up by Martineau taking the ball down to the end line and delivering the pass to the redshirt sophomore. Toledo Jr. took one hard dribble to the right and chipped the keeper to the far left side of the net for the eventual game-winner.
Mercer added an insurance goal in the 54th minute thanks to a beautiful set piece from Kobe Perez. Toledo Jr. drew the foul outside the box to set up Perez's free kick attempt. Perez then delivered the ball over the wall and into the near corner for the 3-1 lead.
The Bruins did not give in, tallying seven shots and six corner kicks in the final 15 minutes of action. However, the Mercer defense did not break, holding Belmont to just its one goal in the 22nd minute.
