Bears Continue Hot Streak with 3-2 Comeback Win Over Bulldogs

Mercer improves to 9-3 at home, defeating The Citadel in five sets
MACON, Ga. – Mercer rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat The Citadel, 3-2 (23-25, 21-25, 25-9, 25-13, 15-12) on Wednesday night at Hawkins Arena.
The victory kept the Bears (15-11, 8-7 SoCon) in a tie for third place in the Southern Conference standings and also solidified Mercer's first winning record in SoCon play since joining the league in 2014. It was additionally the Bears' sixth five-set match this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Set 1 (23-25) | Despite Mercer earning the opening-set point, The Citadel took the early advantage at 9-6. An 8-2 run led by Brittany Major allowed the Bears to reclaim the lead, 14-11. After five tie-ups, the Bulldogs rallied the final three-straight points to take the opening set win, 25-23.

Set 2 (21-25) | Major notched a kill of the set, igniting a 6-3 run. The Bulldogs retaliated by outscoring the Bears 15-4 to take the lead 19-11. Annie Karle notched two kills alongside two Maddie Nunley service aces to spark an 8-1 run, pulling the Bears within two points (21-19). The Citadel continued the set scoring the final four of the seven points, winning set two 25-21. Â

Set 3 (25-9) | Set three began in Mercer fashion, outscoring the Bulldogs 12-4. After The Citadel registered two-straight kills, the Bears generated a 10-1 run which included Nunley serving eight-consecutive rallies. Mercer allowed the Bulldogs to notch two more kills before closing the set with the final two points.

Set 4 (25-13) | Paige Alsten and Roberta Todd notched a kill a piece to begin set four. Mercer extended its lead to 12-6, outscoring the Bulldogs 10-5 which included two Karle kills and an Olivia Sass ace. After back-and-forth points the Bears were able to produce a 12-4 run, closing set four with another Karle kill.

Set 5 (15-12) | Despite the Bulldogs earning the first point of the final set, the Bears took the lead after a 9-3 run. The Citadel tightened the gap to just two points (12-10), but after a Bulldogs service error and a Nunley kill, Mercer claimed the 3-2 comeback victory.

- Mercer moved to third place in the conference standings. The Bears have not had a winning season since 2015, when they went 15-14. The Black and Orange have not had a winning conference season since 2010, when they went 6-4.
- Mercer is 9-3 at home this season, falling to only UNCG (3-2), ETSU (3-1) and Furman (3-1).
- The Bears are 5-1 in five-set matches this season.
- Mercer bested the Bulldogs in kills (53), hitting percentage (.295), assists (49), blocks (13), service aces (9) and digs (53).
- Annie Karle had a match-high 16 kills, while adding seven digs and four total blocks for the Bears.
- Paige Alsten and Brittany Major recorded 11 kills each, combining for only five errors for the match. Major registered a career-high six total blocks, while Alsten connected for a new season-high seven total blocks.
- Alexia Morey recorded a career-high six total blocks, adding two-consecutive blocks during the critical fifth set.
- Maddie Nunley led Mercer with a match-high 37 assists. The sophomore also added a season-high six kills and a career-high five service aces. Nunley notched eight digs and one total block for the Bears.
- Emilee Wissmach and Roberta Todd recorded 12 digs a piece. Todd also registered eight kills, three assists, one ace and one block. Wissmach added five assists and one service ace.
