Mercer fell to Southern Illinois to open the Gamecock Invitational
COLUMBIA, S.C. – Mercer dropped its first contest of the season at the Gamecock Invitational, falling to Southern Illinois by the final score of 6-1. With the loss, the Bears fall to 4-1 on the season, snapping a four-game winning streak.
Southern Illinois scored five unanswered runs through the first three innings until the Bears responded with an RBI pinch-hit single off the bat of Allie Jones in the bottom of the third inning. The Salukis gained the run back in the top of the fourth inning off an RBI double to left field.
The Mercer bats cooled off after a hot start to the season in the Mercer Invitational, registering just four hits against Southern Illinois' Brianna Jones. Jill McElderry surrendered three runs in one and one-third innings of work, earning her first loss of the season. Stella Preston closed the game in the circle for Mercer, hurling five and two-thirds innings and yielding three earned runs.
