Women’s Tennis Welcomes Weekend of Competition

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer women's tennis team will have a busy weekend as they play host to a trio of opponents beginning with a double-header on Saturday, Feb. 17. First, the Bears will take on Georgia Southwestern State at 11 a.m. before turning focus towards Berry College at 3 p.m. On Sunday, the Bears will matchup with UAB at 11 a.m. All matches will be held at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Mercer's first adversary in Georgia Southwestern State enters the matchup holding a 2-2 overall record. The Storm were victorious in their last outing, topping Point University, 5-3. The squad is led by Head Coach Brennon Sewell who is now in his 12th season at the helm.

Saturday's match will serve as the season-opener for Berry College. The Vikings finished the 2017 season with an 8-9 overall record, falling to Oglethorpe in the first round of the SAA Tournament. Six of the eight players for Berry are from the Peach State. The Vikings are led by Head Coach Clay Hightower who has been with Berry since 1984. Hightower has amassed a record of 618-397 for both men's and women's teams combined.

The Blazers of UAB enter the weekend holding a 3-4 overall record, struggling away from home with a 1-3 mark. UAB has already faced one Southern Conference opponent this season, defeating Samford 7-1 in their last outing. Prior to Sunday's match, the Blazers will take on Georgia State Friday afternoon. UAB is led by Head Coach Mark Tija who has been with the Blazers since 2014.

Following play this weekend, the Bears will conclude their home stand with a mid-week match against Jacksonville State, Wednesday, Feb. 28, beginning at 2:30 p.m.
