MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's tennis team stretched to a seven game win-streak with 7-0 sweeps over Georgia Southwestern State and Berry College Saturday at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. The team excelled across the board over the day, not dropping a single set.
The Bears began the afternoon in style, sweeping the doubles competition over Georgia Southwestern State. After clinching the doubles point, No. 2 seeded Stathis Tsiranidis and Carver Arant had a thrilling 7-5 victory over Beau Milwood and Luke Eafano, breaking their opponents in the 12th game of the set. In singles play, No. 4 seeded Ruben Vanoppen topped Eafano in near perfect fashion, 6-1, 6-0. Mercer continued to dominate across the board, sweeping the Storm, 7-0.
Once again the Bears gained early momentum sweeping the doubles competition over Berry College. Jordan Mark and John Wharton earned their first doubles appearance at the No. 3 position and stepped up to the occasion, dominating their opponents, 6-0. Mercer continued to show their stuff, taking every match in the singles competition in straight sets. No. 2 seeded Fernando Guardia downed Ryan Miner, only dropping one game, 6-0, 6-1. Mercer prevailed 7-0 over the Vikings.
The Bears will hit the road for one of their toughest tests of the season, a match against ACC powerhouse, Virginia, on Friday, Feb. 23.
