Bears conclude Rafter Memorial Tournament with loss to Bruins
KENNESAW, Ga. – The Bears dropped a tough 4-0 decision to the Belmont Bruins on Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader. Mercer could only muster two hits, while surrendering nine to the Bruins. This is the second consecutive meeting between the two teams in which Mercer dropped a four-run decision.
Â
Game 1: Belmont 4, Mercer 0
The Bruins capitalized first in the bottom of the second inning as Rouse led off the frame with a solo shot to center field. Belmont later scored in the inning off a squeeze play with runners on second and third, extending its lead to 2-0. The Bruins final run of the inning came off a fielder's choice, allowing Ollinger to cross the plate for the 3-0 advantage.
Â
Belmont claimed its final run of the game in the fourth inning following a bases-loaded, no-out sacrifice fly to center field off the bat of Thomas, bringing Sims home to score.
Â
Micayla Rood delivered on Mercer's first hit of the game in the fifth inning and later advanced to third following a wild pitch. However, the Bears were unable to cut into the deficit.
Â
Mercer had something brewing in the top of the sixth inning after a leadoff double by Megan Lane and a walk by Quirisa Mauga. However, the Bears' final chance went by the wayside, recording three consecutive outs to end the scoring threat.
Â
Lauren O'Dell fell to 2-1 on the season after pitching three innings of work and surrendering eight hits and four earned runs. Stella Preston finished the game for Mercer, pitching three innings of scoreless softball, allowing just one hit.
