Mercer Travels to State of Alabama for Pair of Midweek Battles

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Bears' women's tennis team will hit the road for two midweek matches in Alabama this week. First, the Bears will take on UAB on Wednesday, March 21 at 12 p.m. Mercer will then return to Southern Conference play with a match at Samford on Thursday, March 22, beginning at 2 p.m.

Scouting the Blazers
UAB enters Wednesday's matchup in peak form, winning three straight matches, as well as six of their last seven. In their most recent outing on March 16, the Blazers topped the Charlotte 49ers, 4-3. Marlene Herrmann has been on fire as of late, winning seven straight singles matches at the No. 2 slot. Hermann holds a 10-4 overall record. The Blazers' roster is full of international experience, as eight of their nine players are from overseas. Mark Tjia is in his fifth season as the head coach at UAB.
Scouting the Bulldogs
Samford enters the matchup holding a 6-7 record on the season. After stringing together three consecutive wins, the Bulldogs dropped their last outing (3/15/18) to the College of Charleston, 5-2.
Four players on the Bulldogs' rosters boast records above .500 with Holly Horsfall (7-4) and Grace Jennings (6-3) leading the way. Samford's No. 1 duo of Ellie Gerlach and Roos van der Zwaan have been quite impressive this season, posting a 8-1 doubles record. The Bulldogs have yet to win a match on the road this season, holding a 0-5 record away from home. Samford is led by David Vest who is serving in his ninth season as the head coach.
