Mercer Drops 6-1 Decision to Samford Thursday

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Mercer Bears' women's tennis fell, 6-1, to the Samford Bulldogs Thursday afternoon at the Samford Tennis Center.

Samford took an early lead, winning the doubles competition. Mercer's No. 1 pairing of Grace Korta and Katie Sidor topped the Bulldogs' top pairing of Roos van der Zwaan and Ellie Gerlach. On court No. 2, Samford's Holly Horsfall and Elsa Pool defeated Christie Cesarini and Celine Schepers, 6-2. The Bulldogs took the doubles point with Arianna Beltrame and Grace Jennings', 6-2, victory over Lucia Gutierrez and Marie Mottet.
On court No. 2 Mottet picked up the lone point for Mercer beating Gerlach in straight sets, 6-2, 7-5. The Bears' No. 1 Sidor fell, 6-2, 7-5, to Zwaan. Mercer continued to battle, forcing two matches to super tiebreaks, but the Bulldogs claimed the remaining singles courts. Court No. 3 saw Horsfall beat Schepers, 7-5, 5-7, 10-5. On court No. 4, Korta was defeated by Pool, 6-2, 4-6, 10-4. On court No. 5, Roquebert dropped a 7-5, 6-1, contest to Beltrame. Mercer's No. 6 Gutierrez lost 6-2, 6-1, to Jennings.

The Bears will return home for a Southern Conference battle with the UNCG Spartans, next Friday, March 30 at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. Play is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
