Bears Earn First SoCon Win of Season, Topping UNCG 5-2

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Bears' women's tennis team picked up their first Southern Conference victory of the season with a 5-2 defeat of UNCG Friday afternoon at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.

The Bears grabbed an early 1-0 lead, winning the doubles competition. The No. 1 pairing of Grace Korta and Katie Sidor claimed a 6-3 contest over Blaine Boaz and Corinne Blythe. The Bears' No. 2 duo of Christie Cesarini and Celine Schepers clinched the doubles point as they defeated Emily Ory and Nancy Bridges, 6-2. The Spartans took court No. 3 with Alice Taylor and Sophia Adams topping Anna Sovic and Marie Mottet, 6-3.

Mercer's No. 1 slotted Sidor extended the Bears lead with a 6-3, 6-3, triumph over Bridges. No. 2 Mottet added another point for the Bears as she downed Taylor, 7-5, 6-3. Court No. 3 saw Schepers drop a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, decision to Adams. The Spartans claimed another point with No. 4 Gomez besting Korta, 6-1, 2-6, 6-1. Mercer's No. 5 Roquebert rallied back to defeat Blythe, 6-7, 6-3, 6-1. Play concluded with No. 6 Gutierrez topping Boaz, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.

The Bears will step away from conference play, traveling to Statesboro, Ga. to face the Georgia Southern Eagles next Wednesday, April 4. Play is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
