
Bears Get Back on Track with 5-2 Win Over Appalachian State

DELAND, Fla. – The Mercer men's tennis team returned to their winning ways with a 5-2 victory over Appalachian State Monday morning.

The Bears jumped to an early 1-0 lead, taking two of the three doubles courts. On court No. 3, Carver Arant and Sachin Khurana defeated the Mountaineers' duo of Alex Brea and Alexander Free, 6-4. Mercer's No. 1 pairing of Sam Philp and Olivier Stuart fell, 7-5, to Scott Webster and Milo Bargeron. Mercer clinched the doubles point with Ruben Vanoppen and Nico Guillon's, 7-5, triumph over Alex Pavkovich and Ben Webster on court No. 2.

Mercer carried their momentum into singles play, winning the first three singles matches in straight sets to clinch the match at 4-0. No. 4 seeded Fernando Guardia topped Pavkovich, 6-1, 6-1. No. 5 slotted Stathis Tsirandis downed Campbell Stone, 6-4, 6-4. On court No. 2, Stuart bested B. Webster, 6-4, 6-2. The Mountaineers earned their first point on the day (after the Bears had already clinched the match), as Vanoppen dropped a 6-1, 0-6, 6-2, decision to Carter. Mercer's No. 1 Philp fell 4-6, 6-2, 1-0, to S. Webster, who was ranked earlier this season. The Bears' No. 3 Guillon wrapped up the afternoon with a 6-4, 3-6, 1-0, triumph over Bergeon.

The Bears will return home for a four match home stand, beginning by hosting Stetson, on Saturday, March 10 at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
