
Bears Handed First SoCon Loss by ETSU Sunday

MACON, Ga. – The Mercer Bears' men's tennis team picked dropped their first Southern Conference match of the season with a 5-2 loss to ETSU Sunday afternoon at the Dave Mullins Tennis Complex.

The Bucs got off to a fast start, sweeping the doubles competition. The Bears' No. 3 pairing of Stathis Tsiranidis and Carver Arant fell to Sergi Fontcuberta and David Gonzalez, 6-2. The Bucs clinched the doubles point as their No. 2 duo of Robert Herrera and Miguel Este topped Nicolas Guillon and Ruben Vanoppen, 6-3. ETSU took court No. 1 as well, with Juan Lugo and Tasei Miyamoto defeating Sam Philp and Olivier Stuart, 6-4.

ETSU gained a 2-0 lead as No. 3 Fontcuberta began singles action with a 6-3, 7-5, win over Guillon. Mercer got a point on the board as No. 2 Stuart trumped Lugo, 7-6, 6-1. The Bucs' stretched their lead as No. 4 Gonzalez downed Guardia, 6-4, 7-5. ETSU clinched the match with No. 1 Herrera downing Philp, 6-4, 6-2. Court No. 6 saw the Bears' Arant drop a three-setter, 4-6, 6-1, 6-3, decision to Miyamoto. Mercer added another point with No. 5 Vanoppen's 7-6, 1-6, 7-6, triumph over Este.

With the loss, Mercer falls to 11-6 while ETSU improves to 11-6 on the season.
Up Next
The Bears will continue conference play, traveling to Greensboro, N.C. to face the UNCG Spartans Tuesday, April 3. Play is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
