
Bears Rally from 3-0 Deficit, Topping UNCG 4-3

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Mercer Bears' men's tennis team rallied back from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the UNCG Spartans, 4-3, Tuesday afternoon at the UNCG Tennis Courts.

The Spartans gained an early edge in the match, winning the doubles competition. On court No. 1, the Bears' duo of Sam Philp and Olivier Stuart fell, 6-3, to Connor Thompson and Nico Grewe. Mercer's No. 2 pairing of Nicolas Guillon and Ruben Vanoppen dropped a 6-4 decision to Logan Blaser and Marcus Vidgren. UNCG completed the doubles sweep as No. 3 Jack Burkill and Ollie Palmer topped the Bears' Carver Arant and Stathis Tsiranidis.
UNCG carried their momentum over to singles play, taking both No. 1 and 2 singles courts for a 3-0 advantage. On court No. 1, Philp lost 6-2, 6-3, to Thompson. Court No. 2 saw Palmer down Stuart, 6-2, 7-5. The Bears would not go away easily, winning four straight singles matches to rally back and clinch the match. No. 3 Guillon bested Vidgren in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Mercer's No. 4, Fernando Guardia trumped Grewe in a thrilling three-setter, 6-3, 5-7, 6-1. On court No. 6, Arant battled hard to a 6-3, 2-6, 6-2, triumph over Melnik. With the match on the line, the Bears' No. 5 Vanoppen rallied back from a set down, to clinch the match for Mercer with a 2-6, 7-6, 6-4, victory over Hammarstedt.

With the win, Mercer improves to 12-6 while UNCG falls to 7-9 on the season. Mercer now controls sole possession of second place in the Southern Conference.

The Bears will continue conference play, returning home to host The Citadel this Saturday, April 7. Play is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the LeRoy Peddy Tennis Center.
