Mercer to Face Western Carolina in SoCon Tournament Opening Day

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Mercer has earned the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Southern Conference Softball Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. at UNCG Softball Stadium. The Bears will open the SoCon Tournament on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. against No. 7 seeded Western Carolina Catamounts. This is the highest seed that the Bears have earned since joining the conference and Wednesday will mark the first time that the Bears and Catamounts have squared off in the conference tournament.

Mercer and Western Carolina will square off in the second game of the tournament with a 12:30 p.m. start time. The game, and all games leading up to the championship, will be broadcast live on the SoCon Digital Network. The championship game will be broadcast live on ESPN3.

The Southern Conference office announced the official double elimination bracket and pairings on Sunday afternoon following the conclusion of regular season SoCon play.

UNCG earned the top seed in the upcoming tournament with a record of 43-11 (13-3 conference record), earning the first-round bye. Furman claimed the third seed (38-13, 10-6) and will take on No. 6 seed ETSU (16-25, 4-11) on Wednesday at 3 p.m. The No. 4 seed Chattanooga Mocs (25-27, 9-7) will open the tournament at 10 a.m. against the fifth-seeded Samford Bulldogs (18-36, 7-9).

The Bears are 7-6 all-time in the SoCon Tournament and have made a run in their previous three league tournament appearances. In 2015, Mercer advanced to the championship game before falling to Chattanooga. The Bears reached the semifinals in both 2016 and 2017 and will look to advance further this season.

Mercer finished the 2018 regular season at 32-17 with an 11-5 mark in league play, setting the single-season record for most SoCon wins. The Bears finished 2-1 against the Catamounts this season, playing the three-game series in Cullowhee, N.C. Mercer is 11-5 all-time against Western Carolina.

The winner of Mercer and Western Carolina's game will take on the winner of Furman and ETSU on Thursday, May 10 at 3 p.m. The loser will play in an elimination game against the loser from Furman and ETSU on Thursday, May 10 at 10 a.m. The Bears finished 3-0 against ETSU this season and 1-2 against the Paladins.
