Bears defeat Akron before falling to Loyola Chicago on Friday

Game 1: Mercer 11, Akron 7
A five-run sixth inning broke a 6-6 tie and propelled Mercer to an 11-7 win over Akron in its first game of the weekend. After Micayla Rood reached on a fielding error, Laurenne Sanchez roped a go-ahead RBI double in the following at bat. Mercer's momentum would continue as Megan Lane, Allie Jones, Abby Walsh and Shaila Warren all added RBIs in the frame.

Lynn Gardner tossed a complete game to earn her fourth win of the season. Only three of the freshman's seven runs allowed were earned; the Bears committed two errors. She struck out one batter and walked another.

Jones and Warren drew bases-loaded walks in the first inning to open the scoring for Mercer. The Bears led, 4-0, through two innings before the Zips rallied with a four-run third frame.

Game 2: Loyola Chicago 9, Mercer 0 (5 innings)
Loyola Chicago spoiled Mercer pitcher Stella Preston's season debut in the circle with a 9-0 win over the Bears. The junior went two innings and allowed three runs on six hits while taking the loss.

Mercer mustered just two hits, a pair of singles by Laurenne Sanchez and Megan Lane, in the loss. Allie Jones added one stolen base. The Ramblers struck early and often, plating two runs in the first inning before owning a 7-0 advantage through three frames. Bailey Pattison and Sydney Tucker relieved Preston, allowing six combined runs.
