Mercer drops mid-week contest to Yellow Jackets, 4-1
ATLANTA – Catie Josselet reached base twice and hit her first collegiate home run in Mercer's 4-1 nonconference loss to Georgia Tech at Shirley Clements Mewborn Field on Wednesday.
The Bears (10-16) were unable to muster a consistent offensive attack despite Josselet's strong individual performance at the plate. Georgia Tech's (16-10) limited Mercer to one hit over the first six innings, Josselet's home run.
Mercer's best threat at the plate came in the top of the seventh inning, trailing 4-1. Danielle Castleberry and Allie Jones tallied consecutive singles to lead off the inning before Abby Walsh was later hit by a pitch with one out. Despite loading the bases, Mercer was unable to get any runs across in the final inning.
The Yellow Jackets plated one run in each of the first and second innings to take a 2-0 lead. Mercer struck back in the third inning with Josselet's solo home run to left field. A two-run third inning for Georgia Tech would extend its lead to 4-1.
Mercer starting pitcher Stella Preston tied a season-best with four innings pitched. Preston scattered seven hits and struck out three batters while issuing just one walk. She was relieved by Lynn Gardner in the fifth frame; Gardner allowed just one hit to Georgia Tech over the fifth and sixth innings.
