Bears go 3-0 on Saturday at Gardner-Webb-hosted tournament

BOILING SPRINGS N.C. – The Mercer softball team earned three wins against Wright State, South Carolina State and Gardner-Webb at the Red and Black Tournament on Saturday.

Mercer (9-10) has won four straight games, its longest win streak of the season.

Mercer 13, Wright State 6
The Bears scored seven unanswered runs to defeat Wright State, 13-6, Saturday morning. The contest was halted on Friday with a 6-6 tie in the second inning before being resumed on Saturday morning.

Six of Mercer's seven runs scored on Saturday came in the fifth inning. Tori Ash, Abby Walsh and Shaila Warren roped doubles in the frame.

Mercer 14, South Carolina State 2 (5 innings)
The Bears cranked out 14 runs on 15 hits in a dominant win over the South Carolina State. Mercer scored at least one run in each of the five innings, including four in the first and third frames. Abby Walsh and Kenlie Harvey hit home runs to lead the way while Allie Jones, Shaila Warren, Amanda Schwartz and Megan Lane added doubles.

Lynn Gardner struck out six batters over four innings and was relieved by Sydney Tucker, who tossed one inning of hitless relief while fanning a pair.

Mercer 5, Gardner-Webb 4 (8 innings)
Stella Preston tossed four shutout innings with four strikeouts and Abby Walsh drove in the game-winning run with a RBI single in the top of the eighth to help the Bears top the host Runnin' Bulldogs. Both teams were scoreless through the first five innings as Preston dueled with Gardner-Webb's starting pitcher.

Mercer scored first in the top of the sixth when Laurenne Sanchez crossed the plate via a throwing error. Gardner-Webb would take a 4-1 lead in the home half of the sixth against Bailey Pattison, but Mercer rallied with a three-run seventh inning to force extra innings. Tori Ash drew a bases-loaded walk and Micayla Rood notched an infield RBI single before Kenlie Harvey tied the game by scoring on a wild pitch.
