Mercer drops SoCon opener, 3-2, on Friday
MACON, Ga. – Mercer earned a complete-game performance from right-hander Stella Preston but fell to visiting Western Carolina, 3-2, in a Southern Conference contest on Friday afternoon at Sikes Field.

The Bears (13-21, 0-1 SoCon) dropped their conference opener while Western Carolina (13-17, 1-3) earned its first league win. Mercer's leadoff batter reached base in five of seven innings, but the Bears left seven on base in the contest.

A solo home run by Western Carolina's Shaina Reed – who also threw a complete game in the circle – gave the Catamounts a one-run lead in the top of the second inning.

Trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the sixth, Mercer plated its two runs of the game with the help of a pair of Western Carolina errors. Kenlie Harvey, Shaila Warren and Amanda Schwartz all walked to load the bases before the Catamounts committed two errors that allowed a pair of runs to score. Mercer was unable to generate any seventh-inning rally, however, and fell in the weekend opener.
