Mercer Drops Pair of Games to Radford, Michigan State

Bears defeated twice on Saturday in Auburn
AUBURN, Ala. – The Mercer softball team was defeated twice on Saturday at the Auburn-hosted War Eagle Challenge, falling to Radford, 8-3, and Michigan State, 6-5.

Mercer is now 10-14 overall on the season with one game remaining at the War Eagle Challenge.

Radford 8, Mercer 3
The Bears could not overcome an early deficit as Radford jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning and led by as many as seven runs through three innings played. Stella Preston took her second loss of the season in the circle, tossing just 2.1 innings before turning it over to Bailey Pattison in relief.

A two-run single by Shaila Warren in the fifth pulled Mercer within five runs. The Bears would add one more run in the sixth on an infield single by Megan Lane. Lane and Danielle Castleberry both tallied three hits apiece to lead Mercer. The Bears out-hit Radford, 11-10, despite the five-run defeat.

Pattison tossed 3.2 frames in relief, scattering four hits while allowing just one run.

Michigan State 6, Mercer 5
Mercer rallied from a five-run deficit but came up short against Michigan State, which won on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Trailing 5-0 entering the sixth, the Bears scored three runs on a RBI single by Danielle Castleberry and bases loaded walk and hit-by-pitch by Allie Jones and Abby Walsh. Mercer then tied the contest in the top of the seventh when Amanda Schwartz scored on a fielder's choice and Micayla Rood scored on an error in the outfield.

The Bears dug themselves a hole as Michigan State jumped out to an early lead. Mercer starting pitcher Lynn Gardner (6-5) tossed the entire game, but allowed all six runs on nine hits.
