4/13/2019 7:09:00 PM | Men's Lacrosse
Mercer falls, 17-16, to visiting Panthers on Saturday
MACON, Ga. – The Mercer men's lacrosse team went toe-to-toe with No. 13 nationally-ranked High Point in a 17-16 Southern Conference loss at Five Star Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Mercer (1-10, 1-4 SoCon) owned an 8-7 lead at halftime and was tied with the visiting Panthers (10-2, 4-1) at 13-all with 10 minutes and 28 seconds left in the fourth quarter. Despite Mercer scoring the last three goals of the contest, a pivotal four-goal run by High Point broke the previous 13-13 tie and powered the Panthers to the win.
A back-and-forth first half saw Mercer take three separate leads. The Bears scored three of the final four goals in the second quarter, including an unassisted goal by Michael Quinn with 20 seconds left that gave them the halftime lead. Both teams traded goals to end the third quarter before it was Quinn, again, who tied it at 12-12 with a little over a minute before the end of the period.
Trailing, 17-13, with 1:35 left on the clock in the fourth, Mercer staged a rally that was led by goals from Jake Priester, Sean Goldsmith and Pascal Coombs, before coming up just short.
